English Story Writing

Background Stories capture our imagination of the world!

Be it through books, in multimedia form or via performance, they are fascinating to view, hear and create.  It is the storyteller’s means of expression and the same by which the audience connect.  Hence, there is craftmanship to how stories are conceived and communicated.  This short holiday programme, designed for 10 to 12 years old, would provide the fundamentals of some written story forms and elements, and immersive experience in the creative writing process.  Participants would learn what makes a compelling written story while being aware of the audience and support one another in the exploration of ideas and the writing craft.

5 Modules Brief Content
Day 1 – Stories Impact Us

(Basic tier)

A supportive, creative environment is established by having participants get to know one another through sharing about their own experiences with stories. They set their own expectations for course outcome by self-reflecting on their motivation for writing and the type and style of story they would like to work on. A few common narrative forms and elements will be introduced (e.g. mystery, fantasy, slice-of-life, science fiction, semi-autobiography). Participants will select to work on a story plan based on a narrative form, desired style and tone of voice, and point-of-view.
Day 2 – Understanding and Building Character

(Elective)

Participants will continue to build on their story plan by developing the character/s of their story. They will create character profiles, backgrounds and personalities; learning how to establish character implicitly and explicitly. The development of character relates well to human nature observations. An outing* is organised as a creative activity to help participants find inspiration from real environments.

*Note: subject to weather condition and overall safety considerations.

Day 3– The Setting as a Sketch

(Elective)

Participants will focus on the aspect of setting in this session and how to establish mood in a story. They will learn how the plot and characters relate to the setting; in turn, how the setting could be expressed through them. The detailing of setting relates well to observations of surroundings. An outing* is organised as a creative activity to help participants find inspiration from real environments.

*Note: subject to weather condition and overall safety considerations.

Day 4 – Exploring Themes

(optional)

This session is recommended for those who would like to explore writing at a deeper level. Writing is approached from the objective of exploring themes rather than in pursuit of forms. After brief analysis of excerpts from literary works, participants put forth their own thematic subjects of interest and discuss how these ideas could be explore through their story plan. Participants should be prepared to modify the story plan and re-write if necessary.
Day 5 – Editing and Speaking to Your Audience

(Basic tier)

Participants should have a complete and detailed story plan at this stage, with excerpts, to share. This is the stage of writing where participants can identify gaps in and check for audience’s response to help refine any aspect of their story. To appeal to the audience, participants will also learn how to pitch their story by creating an effective synopsis. This skill is useful to help participant clarify their story idea for themselves as well as in communicating it.
